Electra Battery Materials: Breaking Ground on a Clean Energy Milestone
Electra Battery Materials is stepping into a first-mover role with its cobalt facility—bringing essential battery material refining back to North America.
The clean energy shift isn’t just about batteries—it’s about controlling how they’re made. Electra Battery Materials is addressing a critical gap in the supply chain by building the first battery-grade cobalt refinery in North America. CEO Trent Mell notes that the infrastructure is largely in place, permits are in hand, and with multi-government support secured, construction is moving forward with urgency.
This isn't a distant vision. Commissioning is expected to begin next year, making Electra a major domestic player at a time when geopolitical uncertainty has spotlighted the risks of depending on offshore processing. With demand from automakers and battery manufacturers accelerating, the project puts Electra at the intersection of climate strategy, industrial policy, and energy security. For North America, it’s a meaningful step toward reclaiming control over critical minerals.
