North American Iron: Can Domestic Pig Iron Production Reduce U.S. Import Dependence?

Positioned in Minnesota and North Dakota, the company is advancing a project aimed at supplying domestically produced pig iron to the U.S. steel industry.

North American Iron is developing a U.S.-based pig iron production project designed to reduce reliance on imports by utilizing domestic iron ore from Minnesota. With permitting underway and a targeted production timeline by 2029, the company aims to supply a portion of the growing demand for virgin iron used in higher-grade steel production.

North American Iron is aligning its strategy with a broader shift toward domestic supply chains in the United States, particularly in sectors tied to industrial capacity and national security. Iron and steel production remain central to this transition, as the U.S. continues to rely heavily on imported pig iron to supplement recycled scrap in steelmaking.

The company’s approach focuses on leveraging Minnesota’s iron ore resources, historically one of the most significant sources of iron ore for North America. While domestic production has declined over time, North American Iron points to remaining reserves as a long-term opportunity to support U.S. steel demand. Pig iron, a key input for producing higher-grade steel, is currently imported in large quantities despite growing domestic demand.

North American Iron is targeting production of approximately 2 million tonnes of pig iron annually. This would represent a portion of current U.S. import volumes, which was approximately 5 million tonnes in 2025, against an overall demand of approximately 13 million tonnes. The company’s project is intended to address part of this supply gap while contributing to domestic manufacturing capacity, providing over 650 American jobs and contributing billions to the U.S. economy.

From a development standpoint, the project is advancing through permitting, which is expected to be completed in 2026. Construction and commissioning are planned to begin thereafter, with full-scale production targeted by 2029. If achieved, the operation would position North American Iron as a domestic supplier of merchant pig iron within the U.S. steel ecosystem.
