North American Iron is working to secure a homegrown supply of high-purity pig iron, cutting reliance on foreign imports and boosting America’s steel industry.

Aiming to Supply 2 Million Tons of Domestic Pig Iron Annually
Pig iron—a 100% iron feedstock essential to steelmaking—is in high demand across the United States. With 50 million tons of annual imports and a supply chain disrupted by tariffs, global conflicts, and trade restrictions, domestic solutions are becoming a priority. North American Iron is answering that call by converting legacy Minnesota iron ore into high-purity pig iron at a proposed new facility in North Dakota.
Founder & CEO Jim Bougalis highlights the advantages of high-purity pig iron, the growing need driven by boosted U.S. steel output, and NAI’s environmental and economic edge of domestic production. With strong partners in the States of Minnesota and North Dakota, the company is set to break ground in 2026 and begin production by 2029, with a 20+ year project plan, with generational expansion opportunities.
With the steel industry dependent on reliable, high-quality inputs, North American Iron is positioning itself at the center America First iron—one that’s less reliant on imports and more focused on long-term supply security.
