CEO & CIO of Starlight Capital, Dennis Mitchell, says over the long term real estate and infrastructure assets have outperformed both global fixed income and equities.
"What we find is that both sectors added to a diversified portfolio tend to increase the long term return potential of the portfolio while reducing the long term volatility and risk of that portfolio providing for more efficient returns," says Mitchell.
Mitchell says they found that real estate and infrastructure assets are under allocated to by investors in Canada.
Global vs. Domestic
When it comes to real estate location is key, knowing where to look for profitable opportunities takes a combination of knowledge and creativity.
When Starlight Capital looks at the global real estate market they try to find markets or sectors that are offering better risk return than domestic assets.
"We look for markets that have got significant supply demand imbalances, a situation where you've got a lot of population growth and the supply of the real estate they may need in that market is constrained for some manner," Mitchell says.
